A deceased Ukrainian wanted to get to Portugal without a visa
A senior official resigned after a 40-year-old Ukrainian woman, beaten by immigration agents, died in her department’s detention center.
The head of the Portuguese border service (SEF), Cristina Gatoez, resigned following a scandal that began after a Ukrainian died in a Lisbon airport detention center, trying to enter the country without a valid visa, Reuters writes.
Igor Gomenyuk, 40, died in March at the SEF detention center. He was taken to the institution by border guards after he refused to board a flight from the country.
Gomenyuk died after being hit with telescopic batons by three immigration officers. In September, prosecutors charged the officers with murder.
The death of a Ukrainian caused a scandal in Portugal. It was resumed on Monday, December 7, following unconfirmed reports of SEF plans to install “panic buttons” in places of detention. Human rights activists called this an inadequate response to the incident.
The Interior Ministry, which oversees the SEF, said Gatoez had resigned as part of a restructuring plan to separate police and administrative functions in dealing with immigrants and tourists.
If the resignation was related to the death of the Ukrainian, the Ministry did not respond.
