This year, the top of the head of the Ukrainian Christmas tree should have been decorated with a magic hat instead of the traditional star. However, this decision was criticized in the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, and the organizers of the New Year holidays in Kiev decided to exchange their hat for a star.
The magic hat, which now adorns its top, will be removed from Ukraine’s main Christmas tree, which is located on Sophia Square in Kiev. Instead, on the eve of Saint Nicholas Day, December 19, a star will be hung. This was announced on December 11 by the ethnocultural project Folk Ukraine, which organizes the New Year holidays.
“Yes, our magic hat on the eve of Saint Nicholas Day will be removed and replaced by an octagonal Christmas star. What will happen on Saint Nicholas Day is still a surprise, you will see,” Igor Dobrutsky, founder of the Folk Ukraine project.
Earlier, Dobrutsky, in a comment to UNN, explained that they decided to hang the hat instead of the traditional star, since this year the tree in the Plaza Sofia is decorated with the theme of a fairy forest. Toys in the shape of various animals were hung, and a magic hat, as conceived by the authors, warms these fabulous creatures.
However, the Ukrainian Orthodox Church opposed this method of decorating the Christmas tree. On its Facebook page, the OCU said the hat on the main tree was “amazing.” The OCU also criticized the fabulous concept of tree decoration, claiming that this approach “displaces Christian symbolism.”
“The Christmas star was traditionally installed in the treetops as a symbol of Christ who is born, comes to this world. After all, it was the Christmas star that lit up the dark sky and announced the birth of the Son of God. And what is the meaning of Christmas that the current main attribute of New Years and Christmas of the country with hat the top? “- they were outraged at the OCU.
This year, for the first time, the main tree in Ukraine will be artificial. It was made in Lviv, the height of the tree is 31 meters. In addition to this Christmas tree, two more will also be installed in the capital – near the Peoples’ Friendship Arch and on Kontraktova Square. Each will have its own theme: the first has a glass palace, the second has a painting by Petrikov.
