Much has already been said and re-told about the situation that unfolded in Group B of the Champions League before the final round. Therefore, I will not repeat myself. I will only say that both teams could not be defeated, as this automatically marked the end of their performance in the current Euroseason. And for Inter, drawing was like a defeat.
Shakhtar’s starting line-up remained almost unchanged compared to a successful home game against Real, in which the Miners won 2-0. But Luis Castro was forced to make some adjustments to the lineup of his players. So, in the center of defense, along with youngsters Valery Bondar and Vitao, was team captain Taras Stepanenko. Maikon and Viktor Kovalenko acted in the support zone, on the edges of the Dodo and Nikolai Matvienko, and in front of Tyson, Marlos and Tete. The goalkeeper position was once again entrusted to Anatoly Trubin.
Already at minute 7, the home team created the first dangerous moment of the match, and boy! Nicolo Barella ran down the right wing and made a pass into the center of the penalty area. Romelu Lukaku missed the ball and Lautaro Martínez struck the crossbar hard. Anatoly Trubin could no longer help his team and happiness for the miners that the ball flew to the field, and not to the goal.
The Inter footballers did not seem bothered by such a local failure and continued to attack a lot, more often on the right wing. It was evident that the miners were nervous at the moment, making mistakes. And only in the 20th minute did the guests almost have the first serious attack, which ended with an inaccurate long-range punch from Viktor Kovalenko.
The tension at the gates of the Ukrainian team seemed to grow every minute, although the blows of the local players for the moment did not reach the goal. Then, Lautaro Martínez himself, Stefan de Vrey, Milan Shkrinjar could not hit the target with the ball. And then in the 36th minute, he was injured and had to leave Vitao’s field. Instead, David Khocholava came out.
In the 40th minute, Shakhtar landed a promising free kick. Tyson hit the bottom and the ball bounced toward Dodo after a series of rebounds. He threw a heavy blow from a distance, but Samir Handanovich was on the spot. And then the revolution immediately followed. Romelu Lukaku broke from the right, after which he spotted a pass to Lautaro Martínez. The Argentine hit his head at point blank range, but Anatoly Trubin rescued the guests.
Until the end of the half, Alessandro Bastogne entered shock position twice, both times breaking unsuccessfully. And the teams went to rest.
After the break, the pattern of play has not changed. Inter continued to advance in great forces, creating pressure on the defense of the miners. In the 50th minute, after a pass from the left to Romelu Lukaku, he hit dangerously with the head, but Anatoly Trubin took the ball in his hands. Three minutes later, the same duel of players after a penalty ended again in favor of the goalkeeper. And this time Trubin had to jump to get the ball out of the upper left corner of the goal.
In general, I must say that the players of the Italian club did not differ in a special variety of attacks. These were basically left or right crosses into Shakhtar’s penalty area in hopes of a successful header from Romelu Lukaku, Lautaro Martínez and their teammates. In one of these episodes, in the 63rd minute, Anatoly Trubin hit the ball outside the area with his fist and Marcelo Brozovic shot dangerously from far, but the ball touched the defenders and flew to the corner.
The miners were waiting for their chance for an effective counterattack and in the 64th minute they almost had their way. Tete finished off this quick counterattack with a strong blow, but Samir Handanovich parried the ball. Maicon was the first to finish, but fired over the crossbar. There was another good counterattack from the guests in the 75th minute, but Tyson’s final blow came off weak and the Inter goalkeeper took the ball in his hands.
In the last minutes of the game, the Inter players staged a real assault on the rival goal. The referee added 4 minutes, but the teams won a full 8 minutes. And Shakhtar survived.
Luis Castro’s charges finished third in Group B and will continue to play in the Europa League this spring.
