Charles Michel, President of the European Council, together with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited the happiness checkpoint in the Lugansk region and expressed their support for the territorial integrity and European aspirations of the state. He also pointed to the need to reform the judicial system and combat corruption.
Over the past seven years, the EU has provided Ukraine with more than € 16 billion in aid. This is reported by “Donbass News”.
Michel pointed out that this is the biggest aid from Brussels to a non-EU state. “Much remains to be done to establish the rule of law, judicial reform and the fight against corruption,” he said. These are key conditions for ensuring the trust of Ukrainians in judicial institutions and are of great importance for improving the business climate in the country and attracting foreign investment.
“Ukraine is committed to the fight against corruption and comprehensive judicial reform under the Association Agreement. These are important conditions under the recently agreed macro-financial assistance program and visa liberalization process,” he said. Michel.
The President of the European Council believes that recent decisions of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine have only emphasized the need for increased attention to judicial reform. “A comprehensive judicial reform is imperative to restart the main judiciary and establish a new transparent and meritorious electoral process for the judges of the Superior Council of Justice. They are complex, complex reforms that require courage and strong leadership,” he explains.
