Boycott call will further alienate Turkey from the EU

Erdogan’s call for a boycott of French products violates the agreements concluded between Turkey and the EU, said a representative of the European Commission.

The European Union condemned Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s call for his citizens to boycott French products. This call goes against the commitments made by Turkey; it will further alienate it from the EU, an official representative of the European Commission said on Tuesday 27 October. He recalled that the agreements between Brussels and Ankara provide for free trade.

Erdogan called for a boycott of goods following the attacks on French President Emmanuel Macron, who, after the assassination of teacher Samuel Pati by an Islamist near Paris, emphasized the importance of freedom of expression and opinion and stated that France “will not abandon cartoons and drawings, as others do “.

Earlier, Erdogan accused Macron of Islamophobia, called him “sick” and recommended “that he be examined for his mental state.” In response, France called its Ankara ambassador for consultations. Erdogan’s statements about Macron were strongly condemned by the FRG government and the European Commission.

Samuel Pati, a history, geography and civil society teacher at College Bois-d’Aulne Secondary School in Conflans-Saint-Honorine, was assassinated and beheaded on October 16. He was killed by an 18-year-old Chechen man from Moscow who had refugee status, who had previously distributed threats to the teacher, including on social media. A few days before her death, Pati showed her students cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad from Charlie Hebdo’s magazine as an example of freedom of opinion.

In addition to Turkey, the governments of Muslim countries such as Jordan, Morocco, Qatar, Kuwait and Pakistan have criticized Macron’s statements in defense of freedom of opinion and criticized Islam.
