Turbo mode was replaced by a drop in the pace of reforms, and the firings of reformers were alarming signs of their willingness to resist corruption.
The European Union noted a slowdown in the pace of reforms in Ukraine compared to last year after Volodymyr Zelensky came to power, EU diplomat Josep Borrell wrote about this in his article on the European Truth website.
“The election of Volodymyr Zelenskyy as president in April 2019 was a sign of the determined will of the Ukrainians to fight corruption and weaken the power of the oligarchs in the country. His first months in office were characterized by a” mode of turbo, “with parliament rapidly adopting reforms that had been stalled for a long time. For many observers, the pace of reforms has recently slowed, particularly the implementation of obligations under the Association Agreement,” Borrell said.
According to him, the change of government in early March and the removal of the reformers have become alarming signs of a willingness to counter corrupt interests.
“Despite this, President Zelenskiy remains a source of hope: citizens still expect him to fulfill his promises of reform and change, with which he was elected. In May, he demonstrated leadership by pushing through two important and challenging reforms, namely land reform and banking law, “wrote Borrell.
Let us remind you that Borrell was visiting Ukraine a few days earlier. During a press conference, he noted that the situation around the Anti-Corruption Specialized Prosecutor’s Office may affect the abolition of Ukraine without a visa, but this is possible not before the next report on Ukraine’s compliance with the requirements.
