It was Zorya Luhansk’s final match in the current Europa League. Having scored 6 points in the last two Group G games, Viktor Skripnik’s teams have sadly lost their chances of reaching the playoffs. However, it was very important for them, firstly, to finish this tournament on a positive note, secondly, to take revenge for the home loss in the first round and thirdly, it would be nice to score points for the club coefficient from UEFA.
But the home team, in case of victory in today’s game, could still count on the first place in the group. But there was one more condition: in a parallel match, Leicester should not have beaten Greek AEK.
With the referee’s opening whistle, the Portuguese went ahead with great force on the field, wet from the rain, and already in minute 4 they were able to open the scoring in this match. After a cross from the left, Tsyganiks unsuccessfully hit the ball into the goalkeeper’s area line and Ze Carlos fired from a lethal position over the goal. The Braga footballers continued to have the upper hand and next time upset visiting goalkeeper Shevchenko in the 14th minute, when Novays dared to strike from afar. But the captain of the Ukrainian club played reliably and took the ball in his hands. And in the 20th minute, Andre Horta shot over the crossbar from near the penalty area.
Towards the middle of the half, the game leveled off. Now Zorya started to get closer to the home team’s gates, but our players missed their shots. Like, for example, at the moment of the 24th minute, when Gromov from the left ran almost to the baseline, but was unable to make a rough pass to Gladky.
And Braga kept attacking and shooting on goal from outside the penalty area, possibly expecting a slippery turf. So Andre Horta hit three times, but not all of them made it to the goal. But the transfer of Ze Carlos in the 34th minute to Galeno could well have been productive, but his teammate, already on the goalkeeper’s court, also hit inaccurately. And it was absolutely dangerous when, in the 36th minute, a kind of soccer bullet hit local striker Ruiz. He ran one on one with Shevchenko, but Nikita managed to stop his kick with his foot and saved his own goal.
And only after that did the guests finally get a quick counterattack, which Kabaev completed with a blow to the far corner. Unfortunately, but also shot outside the door. And just before the break, Vladlen Yurchenko missed from the penalty area.
Immediately after the break, Zorya began to play more actively. He made several good attacks, one of which in the 47th minute was completed by Kabaev. But the ball simply fell off the foot of the Ukrainian footballer and flew away from the goal. The Portuguese responded with another long-distance shot already made by Guilherme and again the ball deflected from the mark.
Braga was closer to success in the 56th minute, when Novays dangerously fired from a penalty kick assigned near the visitors’ goal. The ball hit the crossbar and shot out. However, after five minutes the score was opened in the game. Galen stormed into the Ukrainians’ penalty area from the left and fired hard into the far corner. Abu Hannah tried to throw the ball into the corner, but cut it off at the net.
The home team had no intention of stopping there, and in the 64th minute Ruiz missed a good opportunity to double the lead. Now, to the right, he struck hard, but missed the target. However, in the 68th minute, Ricardo Horta did not miss from almost the same position. And Madeiros gave him a pass with wonderful assists on the move. Interestingly, both players entered as substitutes just one minute before the goal was scored.
After conceding two goals, Zorya went on to recover and created some good chances. Then, in the 72nd minute, Favorov fired a shot from the right at Gladkoy, but the defender momentarily stepped forward and threw the ball for a corner. In the 79th minute, Grin, who entered the field in place of Gromov, from the right, probably made a pass, but the ball hit the side post and flew over the goal line. And three minutes after Kochergin’s transfer, Perovich (he also came on as a substitute, by the way) hit his head somewhat vaguely.
As a result, Braga won 2-0, but did not receive full satisfaction, as Leicester in England beat AEK with the same result. Zorya’s dismissal from the Europa League proved sad as, unlike the previous two matches, Luhansk’s team didn’t even play enough for a draw.
