Representatives of the three countries and the European Union condemned the disproportionate use of force and called on Minsk to stop the violence and threats to use the army against its own citizens.
The diplomatic missions of the United States, Great Britain, Switzerland and the European Union in Minsk condemned the use of violence and repression against protesters in Belarus. This is stated in a joint statement by diplomats, which was published on the EU website.
In the statement, the countries expressed their solidarity with the people of Belarus, who demand respect for fundamental freedoms and basic human rights through free and fair elections.
“We condemn the disproportionate use of force and call on the Belarusian authorities to end the violence and threats to use the army against their own citizens and to immediately and unconditionally release all those illegally detained. it must end politically motivated intimidation and prosecution, “the statement said.
In addition, the diplomatic missions asked the country’s authorities to adhere to their international obligations regarding fundamental democratic freedoms and human rights.
Western leaders hope that Minsk will fully and transparently investigate all possible crimes and abuses to bring those responsible to justice. In his opinion, this alone will create an opportunity for a peaceful solution to the crisis on the basis of an open national dialogue.
Earlier, German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said the EU would increase pressure on Belarus.
