The Darnytsia District Court of Kiev ordered the journalist, historian Vakhtang Kipiani, to withdraw from his book The Case of Vasily Stus the extracts containing information on the identity of the deputy of the Opposition Platform – For Life Viktor Medvedchuk. Kipiani said he wouldn’t.

Furthermore, the court charged Kipiani and the publisher in favor of Medvedchuk with a court fee of 860 UAH and prohibited them from disseminating information related to the book in the media, radio, television and the Internet, as well as using information contained in individual sections. of the book and allows Medvedchuk to be identified as a character in the play.

The court rejected the rest of the claims.

Kipiani’s lawyer, Vyacheslav Yakubenko, in a comment to the public, explained that the court banned the distribution of the book as it is now. The solution does not apply to copies already purchased or those in libraries.

“Medvedchuk asked to declare nine fragments unreliable in the book The Case of Vasily Stus. The court granted the claim in part. That is, it was determined that three fragments were not reliable, in another three it prohibited the use of the name Medvedchuk as a character in the work without their consent, “Yakubenko said.

Kipiani said that “no one will apologize to Medvedchuk.”

“By court decision, these episodes must be eliminated. Of course, I will not do this,” he added.

At the last hearing on the case, which took place on October 16, Kipiani told the public that he would appeal if the court rules against him.

The 700-page book contains footage from Stus’s arrest to his death in the field. The first meeting on Medvedchuk’s claim against Kipiani was held on October 2, 2019.

Stus was sentenced in 1980 to 10 years of forced labor and five years in exile for anti-Soviet activities. The poet’s lawyer was the current Ukrainian politician, head of the political council of the Opposition Platform. For life “Victor Medvedchuk.

In August 2018, Medvedchuk’s lawyer demanded that the trial scene be removed from the film “Zaboroniy” about Stus’s life; otherwise, he promised to request the film’s ban in court. Movie crew decided to leave the scene in the movie, which will be released on September 5.
