Russian actor Mikhail Efremov asked the court to mitigate his punishment for committing a fatal traffic accident “to the extent that it is not related to incarceration.” The court commuted the sentence for just six months, up to seven years and six months.

The Moscow City Court has considered an appeal against the verdict of Russian actor Mikhail Efremov in the case of a fatal accident. This was reported by Meduza.

September 8 Presnensky Court of Moscow found Efremov guilty of an accident, as a result of which one person died. The actor was sentenced to eight years in a general regime colony.

The Moscow Municipal Court has reduced Efremov’s sentence to seven years and six months. As a mitigating circumstance, the court recognized the fact that Efremov voluntarily paid compensation for moral damage to the victims.

Efremov asked the court to mitigate the punishment “to the limit not related to incarceration.” He said he refused to plead guilty under pressure from lawyer Elman Pashayev, whose services he refused. After that, he paid compensation to his relatives.

The actor’s lawyer Vladimir Vasiliev asked the court “to reduce the punishment to those limits that exclude being in the area.” The prosecution and the relatives of the deceased, in turn, asked to leave Efremov’s sentence unchanged.

In a comment to Interfax, Vasiliev said he would challenge the verdict in the cassation court.

Efremov caused an accident in central Moscow on the night of June 8. His Jeep Grand Cherokee entered the opposite lane and collided with a Lada pickup. The driver of the van Sergey Zakharov later died in hospital from his injuries.

Pashaev was Efremov’s attorney during the trial. On August 21, in a court session, Efremov said he was refusing to receive his services, but on August 25 it emerged that the actor had signed a new agreement with Pashayev.

Efremov changed his testimony about his guilt in an accident several times, admitting or denying it. Pashayev insisted that his client was not involved in the accident and accused Zakharov’s relatives of greed. The lawyer also read the testimony of witnesses who claimed it was not Efremov who was driving the Jeep Grand Cherokee, although video evidence confirmed that the artist exited the car through the driver’s door after the accident.
