Following the outbreak of the scandal surrounding the “fairy hat”, which this year was placed on the country’s main Christmas tree instead of the traditional star of Bethlehem, it was decided to remove it.
The president of the organization Folk Ukraine, which organizes the New Year holidays in the capital, Igor Dobrutsky, spoke about this “Today”.

“We have already explained several times to all the opponents that the theme of this new year is a fairy forest. But apparently people do not understand this, or do not want to understand it. Therefore, I will be brief: the night before the party from St. Nicholas, we will remove the fairy hat from the Christmas tree and replace it with an octagonal star, “he said.
The main tree of Sofia Square and the hat scandal
- The other day in the center of Kiev on Sophia Square, the installation of the country’s main New Year tree was completed. Its height is 31 meters, and this year it is artificial.
- The theme of this party is “Fairy Forest”. Therefore, cones, acorns, squirrels, mushrooms and a garland in two colors, cool white and green, were hung on the tree.
- The Christmas tree is to be solemnly lighted on Saint Nicholas Day on December 19.
- The scandal has arisen around the top hat, which looks like a hat sized from Harry Potter.
- The Ukrainian Orthodox Church reacted negatively to the new appearance of the main New Year tree. They recalled that the tree is in a sacred place, because “the hat against the background of the thousand-year-old crosses of the Cathedral of Santa Sofia” seems strange.
