The deputies of the Rural United Territorial Community of Syurt of the Transcarpathian Region did not sing the Hungarian anthem. It was a Hungarian prayer, the words of which later became a hymn.

This was announced at the Hungarian Embassy in Ukraine.

Diplomats pointed out that the recording, in which the deputies of the city council can be heard supposedly singing the Hungarian anthem, was made after the Ukraine anthem had been sung. At the same time, the “Hungarian anthem” at the embassy was called the national prayer of the Hungarians, which is several hundred years old and “which later became the national anthem of Hungary.”

“This prayer is part of the cultural heritage and identity of Hungarians living anywhere in the world, such as the Hungarian national colors (red-white-green). Hungarian communities around the world preserve and use them not as symbols of Hungary, but as a symbol of belonging to the Hungarian nation, as is the case of the Hungarians living in Ukraine, “the statement read.

The embassy added that for decades there has been a practice when Hungarian national colors are present in settlements where Hungarians live, and a national prayer is sung during celebrations.

“We hope that this wonderful and highly valued tradition of respect for different nationalities and minority identities will continue unhindered in Ukraine,” the embassy said.

Let us remind you that the incident took place on November 21 during a Syurt Village City Council meeting. Then some of the deputies allegedly sang the Hungarian anthem after taking the oath.

It was also reported that the SBU carried out searches at the office of a Hungarian charitable foundation in Transcarpathia. Law enforcement officers found and seized materials showing signs of agitation by “Greater Hungary”.

As a result, the Hungarian Foreign Ministry summoned the Ukrainian ambassador to give an explanation. In response, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry also summoned the Hungarian ambassador.
