Cherkasy Mayor Anatoly Bondarenko said mayors of regional centers strengthened their positions in the fight against the coronavirus. He said he had not yet decided whether to run for this position in the next election.

Commenting on the journalist’s statement that the activity of the mayor of Cherkasy may be related to the upcoming local elections, Bondarenko emphasized that he had not yet decided whether or not to run again.
“These theories that the mayors are promoting in the regional centers, what is it? The mayors work in the regional centers. Today, the dialogue between the mayors is very normal, and I understand that the central government is monitoring this, and has fear of mayors today. Because mayors the coronavirus period has strengthened their position. And believe me, today the qualification of mayors in cities is extremely high, “says Bondarenko.
Responding to the question of whether he coordinates his activities with Yulia Tymoshenko, the leader of the Batkivshchyna party, of which he is a member, Mayor Cherkass replied: “I am an independent and self-sufficient person. I communicate with the deputies of all people, and Yulia Tymoshenko also … I’m not discussing my actions with anyone. “
Since May 1 in Cherkassy, by decision of the city council executive committee, quarantine restrictions have been eased. Work can be resumed by non-food stores (books, construction, stationery, electronics, and others), beauty salons, hair salons, pet stores, workshops, funeral services, and summer restaurants. In addition, the residents of the city will be able to access parks, squares, markets and fairs. The mayor’s office explained that they met with business representatives who, due to the quarantine, were on the verge of survival.
The national police opened criminal proceedings in relation to the decision of the Cherkasy municipality.
Ukraine’s Minister of Health Maxim Stepanov said the Cherkasy City Council’s decision on early quarantine mitigation represents a threat to human life and health.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in a video message transmitted to Bondarenko “greetings” from the Ukrainian Security Service and the Interior Ministry.
The mayor of Cherkasy said he expects revenge, but is not afraid of him. He released a video message to Zelensky, in which he stated that “Cherkasy will resist.”
