On November 22 and December 3, Telegram channels and social networks published two amateur videos with scenes of the beheading of the elderly by soldiers in Azerbaijani uniforms.
The British newspaper The Guardian managed to establish the identity of those killed: they are Armenians from Nagorno-Karabakh, who refused to leave the region after the armistice.
The British edition published an investigation into the victims of the atrocities on December 15.
It is clearly seen in the mentioned videos that the victims are already elderly and in civilian clothes, that is, they are clearly not related to the autumn hostilities in Karabakh.
The Guardian Moscow correspondent Andrew Roth conducted an investigation and found that elderly Armenians refused to leave their homes in the territories that were withdrawn under the terms of the November 9 agreement to Azerbaijan and were beheaded.
Roth contacted the neighbors of the two victims, their relatives, compared the photographs, including the passport, with the images from the video. As a result, the identities of the murdered were identified. We are talking about Gennady Petrosyan, 69, from the village of Madatashen, and Yuri Asryan, 82, from the village of Azokh.
After the truce, Gennady Petrosyan, 69, flatly refused to leave his village of Karabakh, where he arrived in the late 1980s from Azerbaijani Sumgait (probably as a result of the so-called “Sumgait pogrom” events, when on February 27 and 29, 1988 in the Azerbaijani city a wave of massive violence against the Armenians). A fellow villager tried to get him out by car, but he jumped out of the car and drove home.
Yuri Asryan, 82, from the village of Azokh in the Hadrut region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, also refused to leave his home. Villagers interviewed by the newspaper believe that the older person may not be fully aware of what is happening. Nothing was known of his fate until December 3, when a 29-second video appeared on social media in which people in Azerbaijani military uniforms beheaded him with a knife.
The video with the scene of the murder of Gennady Petrosyan also shows the beheading. Then the killers put their head on the carcass of a dead animal, and the voice-over says, “This is how we get revenge: cutting off their heads.”
These new data suggest that violence in Karabakh continues after the signing of the ceasefire agreement on November 9, notes The Guardian.
On the eve of Azerbaijan, the General Prosecutor’s Office announced the arrest of four soldiers on suspicion of war crimes in Karabakh, such as the desecration of corpses and graves. However, the identification of the murderers of peaceful elders and their punishment is not mentioned.
Earlier, “Strana” told under what conditions the truce in Nagorno-Karabakh was concluded.
We also wrote that after the end of the fighting, Russia sent its peacekeepers to the region.
