Hasidim will not be allowed into Ukraine
The Home Office advises Hasidic pilgrims who are trapped at the border to return home, as a cold snap is approaching.
The authorities do not intend to make an exception for Hasidic pilgrims trapped on the border with Belarus and will not lift the entry ban introduced before the end of September. This was announced on Thursday, September 17, by the adviser to the head of the Interior Ministry, Mikhail Apostol, on the air of the television channel Ukraine-24.
“In connection with the pandemic, Ukraine has closed its borders to foreigners. There will be no exceptions for the Hasidim,” he said.
He recommended that the pilgrims return home. “There is a cold wave, our recommendation is to return to Belarus, buy tickets and go to our countries,” said Apostol.
He assured that the situation both on the border and in Uman, where the Hasidim intend to enter, is under control.
The apostle also said that there are up to 3,000 pilgrims in Uman. All of them will be admitted to Rabbi Nachman’s grave on Friday. “All of them will go to the place of pilgrimage subject to quarantine measures,” emphasized the Apostle.
To maintain order, some 500 Ukrainians and five Israeli policemen were dispatched to Uman.
We recall that the Cabinet of Ministers closed the Novye Yarilovichi checkpoint in the Chernihiv region on the border with Belarus, through which the Hasidim are trying to reach Ukraine despite the quarantine ban.
