The application to use “Vkonakte”, bypassing the blockade in Ukraine, stole user data from Ukraine. It contained malicious code.
This is reported by the National Cyber Security Coordination Center under the NSDC on Facebook.
According to the NCCK, the “VK Unblock” extension for the Chrome and Edge browsers contained malicious code to steal data from Google accounts, including data on mobile device activity, geolocation, and others. This extension was found to secretly collect personal data and, upon receiving an order from the management server, could change information on web pages, including search results.
This extension was found to be installed by more than 3 million users, and the main attack countries were France, Ukraine and Brazil. This app is now blocked by Google and Microsoft.
In December 2020, it was reported that the European Commission included the Russian social network VKontakte in the list of resources promoting the distribution of pirated content. Also on the list was the Telegram messenger.
RBC-Ukraine wrote that according to the NSDC, users of the Russian social network VKontakte, which is banned in Ukraine, could be “registered”. Company representatives claim that they were able to avoid blocking the resource in Ukraine.
