Top 10: Paseo, Verstappen, Pérez, Albon, Riccardo, Hamilton, Ocon, Raikkonen, Bottas, Giovinazzi
Qualifying for the Turkish Grand Prix promised to be interesting. Max Verstappen at Red Bull was the best in all three tests, and all the drivers complained about the slippery track. The last time Formula 1 was in Turkey was in 2011, and the Istanbul track is clearly not ready to accept cars, as the road was laid less than two weeks ago. The cars slide on the track and Lewis Hamilton called the situation disastrous. In addition, the track was wet after the morning rain, which recharged as soon as the session started.
The drivers barely dominated several laps, but it was impossible to continue in such conditions and the stewards stopped qualifying with red flags. The session resumed after 40 minutes. The rain ended, but the track was very wet and the drivers finished the first part of qualifying with some problems. The best in such conditions looked like Verstappen, who was much more confident driving the car.
Max seemed to take pole easily, but Lance Stroll, 22, did it! The Race Point driver was one of the first to switch to intermediate tires and started to show good results, while Verstappen still needed time to warm up the tires after switching from completely wet tires to intermediate tires.
For a while, Sergio Pérez held pole position, but on the last attempt, Stroll was incredibly ahead of his teammate and Verstappen, earning his first career pole pole. Excellent grades.
Mercedes did not look very good in these conditions. Lewis Hamilton, who could become a seven-time world champion tomorrow, will start sixth and his teammate Valtteri Bottas, ninth.
Note that both Ferrari and McLaren did not make the top 10, but for the first time this season, the Alfa Romeo drivers made their way to the third place in the rankings.
