Ukraine’s Health Minister Maxim Stepanov said the next stage of mitigation of the restrictive measures may begin next week.

Ukraine’s Health Minister Maxim Stepanov, in a briefing on May 14, confirmed that the government plans to ease the quarantine on May 22, reports the GORDON correspondent.

On the eve of this, Prime Minister Denis Shmygal announced it for the first time. He stressed that the second phase of the lifting of restrictive measures can begin if there is no increase in the number of people infected with coronavirus.

Stepanov said the government has developed four stages of quarantine exit (the government previously stated that there are five of them).

“Each of these stages meets specific criteria. And for each of these stages there are corresponding weaknesses. We develop all stages on the basis of 10 days. Why exactly 10 days? This is the period for which we can clearly determine based on information analysis we are ready to move to the next stage, “said Stepanov.

He noted that in the second stage the following relaxation is planned:

  • permission to conduct sports competitions without spectators;
  • opening of hotels (except hostels) without restaurants and gyms;
  • permission to conduct independent external evaluations for school graduates;
  • work permit for public transport;
  • permission to open preschool educational institutions.

“I want to emphasize that (and this will be clearly defined in the government decree, which we will propose to adopt), all this is possible only if the anti-epidemic rules are observed: mask regime, social distance, disinfection of hands with antiseptics.” Stepanov said.

Quarantine in Ukraine was introduced on March 12. Due to the spread of coronavirus infection, COVID-19 banned mass events, closed shopping malls, stores (except supermarkets and pharmacies), restaurants, cafes, gyms, beauty salons, and limited vehicle operation. On March 17, the metro was closed in Kiev, Kharkov and the Dnieper. In some cities, only doctors, police, rescuers, and employees of critical infrastructure companies can now use public transportation.

The restrictive measures will be effective until May 22, however, as of May 11, Ukraine began the first phase of the weakening of the quarantine. Citizens were allowed to visit parks and squares. In addition, shops selling non-food items, beauty salons and notary offices were opened, as well as summer cafes.

In Ukraine, as of the morning of May 14, registered 16,847 cases of coronavirus infection have died 456 person. In total, according to the American Johns Hopkins University, more than 4.34 million people were infected with the coronavirus, more than 297.2 thousand of them died and 1.55 were cured.
