The governments of the EU countries are considering the possibility of starting negotiations with the developers of the Russian vaccine Sputnik V. Applications from four EU countries will be required to start the process.
This was reported by Reuters with reference to political and diplomatic sources in the EU.
Hungary and Slovakia have already bought the Russian vaccine, the Czech Republic is interested in buying it. An EU official said Italy is considering using the country’s largest vaccine bioreactor at the ReiThera plant near Rome to produce Sputnik V.
Brussels has been criticized for its slow launch of the vaccine, as a former UK bloc loses restrictions as the vaccination program gathers momentum there. Italy is intensifying isolation, hospitals in the Paris area are close to overcrowding and Germany has warned of a third wave.
The EU has signed agreements with six Western vaccine manufacturers and has started negotiations with two more. It has approved four vaccines so far, but production interruptions have slowed down its vaccination campaign and some Member States are looking for their own solutions.
“If Sputnik V were included in the EU’s vaccine arsenal, it would be a diplomatic triumph for Russia, whose trade with the bloc has been limited by sanctions for many years due to the annexation of Crimea and intervention in eastern Europe. Ukraine This could also lead to the division of the bloc into states that are categorically opposed to giving Moscow any victory, and those that are in favor of showing that Brussels can cooperate with the Kremlin, ”writes Reuters.
Let us remind you that Serbia has announced the date for the start of production of the Russian Sputnik V.
We also wrote that Azerbaijan officially approved the use of “Sputnik V”.
