Special Coronavirus Mutation Identified in Nigeria

Nigeria identified a ‘non-British’ type of coronavirus

The new mutant virus is not similar to the variant found in Great Britain, but there are similarities to the type recorded in South Africa.

Experts in Nigeria have identified a new strain of COVID-19, which is a special form of mutation of the coronavirus infection. This was announced on Thursday, December 24, by the director of the African Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC of Africa), John Nkengasong, on the air of the television channel eNCA.

“We are talking about a special mutant virus that is not similar to the variant recently discovered in the UK. <...>… However, the strain identified in Nigeria may bear some similarity to the coronavirus 501.V2 variant detected on December 18 in South Africa, “said Nkengasong.

At the same time, he stressed that additional research is needed to determine all the characteristics of the new variation of COVID-19.

According to the television channel, the “Nigerian” type of the virus was detected in samples taken on August 3 and October 9 in the state of Osun. Previously, it was not as aggressive as 501.V2, which triggered a powerful second wave of the pandemic in South Africa.

Recall, Nigeria became the first African state in which a new type of coronavirus was registered. According to the latest data, 80,922 cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in the country, of which 1,236 ended with the death of patients.
