Spain and the United Kingdom have reached a preliminary agreement on the future of Gibraltar after Brexit. Part of the treaties of the European Union will apply to Gibraltar.
About this in Twitter Said the Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez.
“We are embarking on a new stage. We have reached a preliminary agreement with the United Kingdom on Gibraltar that will allow us to remove obstacles and move towards shared prosperity,” said Sánchez.
According to Reuters, the parties agreed that part of the EU treaties, including the Schengen zone, will apply to Gibraltar. The agreement is temporary and both parties agreed to a six-month transition period to finalize the issue.
Please note that Gibraltar is not mentioned in the trade agreement between the European Union and Great Britain. If London and Madrid had not reached an agreement today, as of 23:00 GMT at the border of Spain and Gibraltar, customs controls would have been established for tens of thousands of Spaniards who cross the border daily.
Let us remember that today, temporarily, the EU-UK agreement on relations after Brexit entered into force.
The European Parliament will finally consider the Brexit deal in March.
