North Korea has carried out several executions of officials and is fighting the coronavirus epidemic. The country is also preparing for possible changes in US foreign policy after Joe Biden came to power.
According to the South Korean edition of The Korea Herald, a representative of the National Intelligence Agency spoke about the situation at the neighborhood meeting of the parliamentary intelligence committee.
An official was executed in North Korea in August for importing banned products amid heightened customs checks at the border due to a pandemic, according to an intelligence report. Another high-ranking official was executed on charges of currency fraud.
The South Korean intelligence community has reported that DPRK leader Kim Jong-un has recently taken “reckless actions” amidst economic difficulties. In particular, it raised the prices of raw materials and reduced industrial production. In addition, the country was ordered to suspend fishing and salt production due to concerns that sea salt may be infected with the coronavirus.
And in Pyongyang and Chagando province, solitary confinement was introduced.
Also in North Korea, they are concerned that hopes of a thaw in relations with the United States following the defeat of Donald Trump in the elections could be dashed.
Pyongyang may postpone the Korean Workers’ Party convention, which was scheduled for early next year, for fear of the spread of the coronavirus, the agency said. However, the country is planning a military parade to showcase its weapons capabilities before the Biden administration.
Earlier, Strana reported that DPRK diplomats were prohibited from scolding the United States during the transition of power from Trump to Biden.
We also write that North Korea has planted mines on the border with China to combat the coronavirus.
