Sailors returned to Ukraine from pirate captivity

The Ukrainian sailors on the ship Curacao Trader were captured by pirates on July 17. They were only released on August 20. Now they have returned to their homeland.

Six sailors, previously captured by pirates on the Curacao Trader, have returned to Ukraine. This was reported by the press service of President Volodymyr Zelensky on Monday, September 7.

“Our sailors spent more than a month in captivity with pirates, but eventually they returned to Ukraine and will soon be reunited with their families. I want to thank our diplomats, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who conducted difficult negotiations on the release of the captives. We kept the situation under control the entire time. You should know that every citizen is important to our state, ”Zelensky said.

As a reminder, on July 17, pirates attacked a tanker with Ukrainians on board off the Nigerian coast. They took hostage 15 members of the ship’s crew, including citizens of Ukraine.

Later, the Foreign Ministry clarified the details of the seizure. The attack on the tanker took place at the most remote point off the coast of all previously recorded piracy cases in the Gulf of Guinea.

The sailors were not released until August 20.
