Shakhtar General Secretary Oleksandr Cherkasov commented on the postponement of the UPL match with Vorskla to Kiev. The Poltava club wanted to move the match to Alexandria, but the UPL decided to hold the match in Kiev.
– We were ready to play our 7th round away game with Vorskla in Poltava, but as you know the city is currently in the epidemiological red zone so other options needed to be considered.
Regarding the possibility of holding the match in Alexandria: unfortunately, neither in this city nor in neighboring Kropyvnytskyi are there hotels where we can host the team in accordance with the safety regulations related to the coronavirus. Keep in mind that we recently had a COVID-19 outbreak, as well as the fact that we have entered the competitive cycle of the Champions League. Participation in the Champions League imposes on the club the obligation to comply with greater security measures.
UEFA’s medical protocol, in particular clause 13, contains a number of restrictions and recommendations that we must strictly adhere to. This applies to individual hotel room availability, distance, separate food area, and hotel travel logistics requirements. By neglecting safety regulations, we endanger our players, club employees, referees, players and the management of our closest rivals: Vorskla Poltava and Inter Milan. Therefore, for us, the safety and health of players and employees is our highest priority today.
Taking into account the current situation, holding the match in Kiev, where there are no problems with hotels in terms of the sanitary standards required during the coronavirus epidemic, seems to be the optimal and balanced decision of the UPL. This is our home game, and we will play the away game, as expected, in Poltava, if there is a permit. I think it would be better for Vorskla to play Shakhtar in their home stadium with the support of their fans than without spectators in another city.
