In Ukraine, a scandal broke out with a showman and former candidate for mayor of Kiev Sergei Pritula. On air, he agreed with the listener’s anti-Semitic statements.

The incident took place in September during the broadcast of the Posered Tizhnya program on Radio NV. But it received publicity now, following the reaction of the Journalists’ Ethics Commission, which publicly condemned Sergei Pritula’s actions.

And also after the Jewish community presented a statement to the police.

Interestingly, the previous Pritula actively “nightmare” to those who, in their opinion, said something wrong on the air. Then, he openly criticized applicants for participating in Eurovision for relatives in Crimea and concerts in Russia.

But he faced the anti-Semitic antics very calmly and even told the listener that he shared his outrage.

“Strana” has compiled the details of this story.

“Sabbat in Uman”

On September 10, on the eve of the Rosh Hashanah celebration, listener Roman from Kramatorsk connected to Sergei Prytula’s live program. He called the annual pilgrimage to Uman a “Saturday,” and the founder of Bratslav Hasidism, Tzaddik Nakhman, to whose grave the Hasidim come, “Natsik hatsman.”

“Now there will be a Saturday in Uman. Natsik hatsman will be held, seven thousand have already run there with an entry ban. What do we have at the borders? His mother is like that ”- said the listener.

“Well, I fully share your emotional outrage that there are no rules for everyone on how to cross the border correctly. You see, people tend to their native Ukraine with different goals. But, in fact, this is not the topic of our conversation now.” , although I was very happy to hear you in the air in such a good mood ”- Pritula replied.

Also in the broadcast video there is a moment when Pritula, during the listener’s tirade, raised her hands and turned to a colleague sitting in the studio. That is, somehow he noticed for himself how scandalous what was said. However, in words, whether jokingly or seriously, he praised the caller.

Journalistic Ethics Reaction Commission

After the broadcast of the program “Posered Tizhnya”, a complaint was sent to the Journalistic Ethics Commission. Its author, Oleg Shikan, noted that the presenter not only failed to inform the audience about the inadmissibility of using the radio as a spokesperson for anti-Semitic statements, but, on the contrary, engaged in a friendly conversation with the listener.

According to the author of the complaint, the host’s supportive and condescending reaction to what he heard seemed like an unequivocal direct spur of more anti-Semitic antics on the NV air.

The Journalistic Ethics Commission has responded to the complaint.

Analyzing the case on the air on September 10, the Commission agreed that Sergei Pritula, having entered into a friendly dialogue with the guest, could create the impression among listeners that on a particular program and on the air of radio NV in general, tolerate offensive statements. In addition, they noted that Prytula has extensive experience in conducting live broadcasts, so what happened cannot be attributed to his lack of professionalism or the fact that he was confused.

The Commission considered the case in question as a serious violation of the Code of Ethics by a Ukrainian journalist and publicly denounced Serhiy Pritula and Radio NV.

The radio said its host reacted to anti-Semitism “with irony.” But they admitted that Pritula made a mistake and should have taken the caller’s words more seriously. With the presenter he “had a conversation”, and the caller’s number was added to the “blacklist”.

The police will deal with the incident.

The United Jewish Community of Ukraine also announced that it did not intend to drop this case and, regarding the statements of the listeners, it will approach the Kramatorsk police with a statement to open a criminal case under art. 161 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (incitement to ethnic hatred).

The case was opened against the caller on the air.

The statement said that the listener Roman humiliates the national honor and dignity of Jews with his statements.

How Pritula “nightmare” to the guests of the Crimean and Russian air

At the same time, Sergei Pritula does not always ignore seditious issues from his point of view. And very actively “pressures” those who, in his opinion, say the wrong things.

So, being the host of the National Team for Eurovision-2019, he organized a “patriotic interrogation” for the singers of the duo Anna Maria, who were born in Crimea, and made them cry. He mentioned that the girls’ mother holds a position in the Crimean government.

“Understanding what his background is and one way or another is emerging now, did you not know that the position of his mother in the Crimean government, which even has a medal” For the return of Crimea “from the occupation authorities .. Do you know what yours really is? Big problem? The fact that now I can ask you a question, and you will have a very difficult choice, in which career to quit – you know this question is “Whose Crimea is it?” … and then you will have a fork – either say ‘our’ and then cross over to my mother’s career, or say ‘they’, and then cross over to his career in this country, “said the host.

Maria and Anna Opanasyuk replied that they made their decision a long time ago and that they cannot influence the choice of their parents, but it is still their parents who they love and respect.

“We are Ukrainian singers, we were born in Crimea, we did not violate any Ukrainian laws, we did nothing wrong, we adhered to the rules of the National Team and did not give concerts in Russia. We are offended that people do not judge us for our actions, including creative work, but for headlines and slogans, “said the girls.

As a result, all the jurors gave Anna and Maria Opanasyuk the lowest score: one, and after this broadcast, their parents were added to the “Peacemaker” site.

The questioning awaited the other participants with partiality. So Pritula asked singer Maruv, who ultimately won, how her patriotism relates to the fact that she was on tour in Russia.

In response, Maruv advised reading his interviews, in which he had already answered this question. He recalled that Eurovision was created after the Second World War and the goal of the contest is to unite. He also recommended asking all political questions in the Verkhovna Rada.

“Many people who live in Russia have a great attitude towards Ukrainians, they admire Ukrainian music,” said the finalist. And he added that not all residents of the country can be tried by the president.

In the end, it all ended with the fact that Maruv refused to participate in Eurovision-2019 from Ukraine and the next two participants as well. So in the end, after the “patriotic” scandal during the National Team, Ukraine did not participate in the music contest at all.
