Shakhtar scored eight points in the Champions League group with Real Madrid, Inter and Borussia Monchengladbach and secured a place in the 1/16 Europa League final.
In this round’s draw, the Pitmen will be among the seeded teams. As a reminder, there are twelve UEFA Europa League group winners and the top four third-place winners of the UEFA Champions League.
Consequently, in the first stage of spring, Shakhtar will play with one of the teams that ranked second in the Europa League group, or with one of the worst third places in the Champions League. However, there are restrictions for those who have withdrawn from the Champions League. Of the four “non-seedlings” in the championship league, only two can play against Shakhtar: “Salzburg” and “Olympiacos”. Krasnodar and Dynamo (Kiev), who are also not seeded, will definitely not be Shakhtar’s rivals.
Now the names of only three potential opponents of Castro’s team are known in the 1/16 final of the LE:
- Salzburg (Austria);
- Olympiacos (Greece);
- Red Star (Serbia).
The rest of possible rivals will be determined on the night of December 10-11.
The draw for the 16th Europa League final will take place on December 14.
