Sebastian Vettel finished 13th at Spa, Ferrari’s best result at the Belgian Grand Prix. The four-time world champion does not expect notable progress in the upcoming races, but urges not to despair.
Q: Sebastián, is the low speed of the Ferrari in Spa due to the fact that the characteristics of the track did not match the car?
Sebastian Vettel: Yes and no. Of course, Spa is one of those tracks where engine power is important, and this year we have problems with power, so we expected to be behind.
On the other hand, today we were behind rivals who were normally ahead in recent races, I’m talking about Alfa Romeo and Haas. The reason is not entirely clear, but I hope it is due to some peculiarities of the Spa circuit.
We have learned from this weekend and now we have to work hard to stay strong, remain a team and do our best. In the next two weeks, there will be very important races for the team, but you have to be realistic and not expect miracles. The machine is what it is, now we cannot perform at the level we want.
Despite this, you must remain optimistic and see the positive moments, although there are not so many at the moment.
Question How disappointed are you with the results of the weekend?
Sebastian Vettel: Of course, I am disappointed. During the race I tried a lot, even in terms of driving, to minimize the weaknesses of the car. But the facts tell us that we are simply not fast enough. You can play a few tenths, but you shouldn’t expect a miracle.
It was difficult for us to achieve a high pace this weekend, but we learned a lot. You need to remain calm and not despair, as this will lead nowhere.
Q: What can you say about Monza, where will the next race take place?
Sebastian Vettel: I have fond memories with Monza, because on this track I got my first victory twelve years ago.
Question: So you have no choice but to remember the past?
Sebastian Vettel: Yes, I have to remember the past! (Laughs) In recent years it has been nice to come to Monza thanks to the fans, but this year the situation will be different. The Monza stage means a lot to the team, we will keep fighting.
