British scientists have started testing a new method to protect against the coronavirus. They inoculate volunteers with antibodies to try to induce them «instant immunity.
This is reported by The Guardian, citing a statement from scientists.
The drug for «Instant Immunity was developed by University College London in conjunction with AstraZeneca, which has developed a coronavirus vaccine with the University of Oxford. The advantage of the drug is that it immediately provides antibodies to the patient, whereas conventional vaccines allow the formation of immunity only for a month.
According to the BBC, an experimental injection is offered to those who have been in close contact with COVID-19 patients for the past eight days. They want to involve a thousand volunteers in the experiment.
According to the virologist leading the study, 10 patients who have found coronavirus at home, in hospitals or educational corridors have already been vaccinated.
«We know that this combination of antibodies can neutralize the virus, so we hope to find that vaccination treatment can lead to immediate protection against the development of COVID-19 in people it threatens, and it would be too late to offer a vaccine. ”He added.
The developers hope the drugs can protect people from COVID-19 for six months to a year. If approved by the medical regulator, they will be available in March or April.
Several countries around the world have already started mass vaccination against COVID-19 with Pfizer / BioNTech, which is 95% effective. Britain was the first to start it on December 8.
Additionally, many countries have already approved the Modern American vaccine. The manufacturing company reported 94.1% effectiveness of the drug and 100% in preventing a severe course of the disease. The United States was the first to begin vaccinating with the Moderna vaccine on December 21.
The countries of the European Union officially began vaccination on December 27 with the drug Pfizer / BioNTech.
