Toothpastes containing zinc or stannous fluoride and cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) mouthwashes can neutralize the coronavirus in the mouth by 99.9% in two minutes.
This is evidenced by recent laboratory studies conducted in collaboration with the New Jersey State School of Medicine (NJMS) Public Health Research Institute and the Newark Regional Biosafety Laboratory, according to the Dental Tribune.
In this study, scientists evaluated the effectiveness of oral care products in reducing the amount of COVID-19.
“We are in the early stages of our clinical trials, but our preliminary laboratory and clinical results are very promising,” said Dr. Maria Ryan.
While brushing and rinsing are not a cure or a way to fully protect a person from infection, he said, they can help reduce transmission and slow the spread of the virus, complementing the benefits people get from wearing masks, social distancing and frequent hand washing.
“The results show that certain toothpastes and mouthwashes can help slow the spread of SARS-CoV-2 by temporarily reducing the viral load in the mouth,” the researchers noted.
The investigation involved about 260 people with COVID-19.
“We believe that oral care plays a role in fighting the global pandemic alongside other preventive measures,” the scientists said.
