Canelo’s aggressive work meant that by the ninth round Smith was simply tired and the fight turned into a one-sided beating of the champion.
The judges gave the unconditional victory to Saúl Álvarez – 119-109, 119-109, 117-111.
In addition to Smith’s WBA super belt, Saúl Álvarez also won the vacant WBC title, which David Benavides lost without a fight in August.
