Today, November 23, the trial of former French President Nicolas Sarkozy begins in Paris. This is the first case of its kind in the history of the country.

This is reported by bfmtv.

The corruption case reportedly refers to possible Libyan funding for Sarkozy’s 2007 election campaign. In addition to him, the lawyer Thierry Herzog and the former judge of the Court of Cassation Gilbert Azibert appear in the case.

Sarkozy is accused of trying to obtain secret information from Azibert through his lawyer in early 2014 about another case opened against him for breach of trust by billionaire Liliane Bettencourt, the owner of L’Oreal. In particular, according to the investigation, Sarkozy was interested in whether the notebooks that were confiscated could be removed with Libyan money.

The trial will last until December 10. The hearing is also likely to be suspended due to the suspicion of COVID-19 in Erzog.

If Sarkozy is found guilty of corruption, he faces up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to one million euros.

Recall, it was previously reported that Sarkozy is suspected of receiving illegal funds from the regime of former Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi.

According to the Mediapart portal, Sarkozy received more than 50 million euros from him. The prosecution suspects that he facilitated the promotion of Qatar’s bid to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup by this bribery.
