Russian government wants to fine Elon Musk for internet use

On December 29, the Russian government registered with the State Duma a bill that provides for fines for the use of foreign satellite communication networks bypassing the system of operational search measures (SORM). The television channel “Rain” drew attention to this.

According to the document card on the website of the State Duma, on the day of registration, the bill was sent to the State Building and Legislation Committee.

The television channel said that among the communication networks to which the presented document refers are the satellites for the global Internet Starlink, which are launched by the company of the American businessman Elon Musk, as well as the British system OneWeb.

The Russian government proposes fines for circumventing SORM in the amount of up to 1 million rubles. (about 380 thousand UAH). Administrative punishment is foreseen for officials and legal persons.

Starlink is a project of SpaceX’s near-Earth satellites for cheap, high-speed Internet. The FCC has given SpaceX permission to launch 12,000 such satellites, which are built for a large-scale network designed to provide people on Earth with broadband Internet access anywhere in the world. All satellites are supposed to go into orbit after 2020. Total investment in the project is estimated at $ 10 billion. SpaceX has already launched 16 Starlink missions, and there are nearly 1,000 satellites in orbit.
