Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin signed a decree to close trade missions in Lithuania and Ukraine on November 7. Therefore, Russia now has trade offices in 58 countries.

The Russian government decided to close trade missions in Lithuania and Ukraine. Such a decision was published on the official Russian legal information portal on November 11.

Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin signed the decree on November 7.

“1. Liquidate: the trade mission of the Russian Federation in the Republic of Lithuania, the trade mission of the Russian Federation in Ukraine. 2. Approve the amendments attached to the laws of the government of the Russian Federation,” says the first page of the resolution.

According to the document, the updated list of states in which Russia’s trade missions are established now includes 58 countries.

Russia’s Ministry of Industry and Commerce suggested closing the offices on September 16 this year. Then, the department prepared the corresponding draft government decree, which was published on the federal portal for draft regulatory laws.

In a project explanatory note, the ministry reported on the unpromising work of the Russian representative office in Lithuania, noting the drop in commercial turnover between the countries (by 31.8% in the first half of 2020) and the suspension of the Russian-Lithuanian intergovernmental commission on trade, economy, science, technology, humanitarian and cultural cooperation.

The same note says that it is recommended to close the trade mission of the Russian Federation in Ukraine because in August the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine terminated the agreement with Russia on the mutual establishment of trade missions.

Ukraine’s Deputy Foreign Minister Vasily Bodnar said in June 2020 that since the occupation of Crimea and armed aggression in Donbass, Ukraine has ended about 150 of the 453 contracts and agreements with the Russian Federation, including one of the basic agreements: friendship, cooperation and partnership (this document expired April 1, 2019).
