Ukraine’s cessation of water supply to Crimea in Russia is considered inhumane
The appeal is addressed to the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet Heria, and the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights, Duna Mijatovic.
The Human Rights Council of the President of the Russian Federation called on the UN to intervene in the situation with the supply of drinking water to the residents of Crimea. This was announced on Monday, September 14 by the Interfax news agency with reference to the council’s statement.
The appeal is addressed to the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet Heria, and the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights, Duna Mijatovic.
The Human Rights Council of the President of the Russian Federation calls on them to protect the right of Crimean residents to have access to safe drinking water and prevent a humanitarian catastrophe on the peninsula.
The authors of the appeal point out that water from the Dnieper River could provide drinking water to Crimea, but the Ukrainian authorities stopped supplying it entirely through the Northern Crimean Canal in 2014, after the annexation of the peninsula by Russia.
“We consider that the actions of the Ukrainian authorities to stop the water supply through the Northern Crimean canal to the peninsula are illegal, inhumane and politically motivated,” said the RF President’s Human Rights Council.
We will recall, the representation of the President of Ukraine in the Republic of Crimea said that Russia is trying to use pressure to persuade Ukraine to restore the water supply of the annexed Crimea.
