The European Union announced that it won an arbitration with Ukraine to ban the export of roundwood. Now, the Ukrainian side should soon lift the ban adopted in 2015.

This is indicated in the message on the European Commission website.

“The final decision of the dispute settlement committee established under the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement revealed that Ukraine’s ban on the export of all raw wood is inconsistent with the Association Agreement. Therefore, it is expected that Ukraine end the export ban as soon as possible, “he added. – noted in the EC message.

At the same time, it is specified that the EU supports Ukraine with various projects, including support for environmental protection, as well as public administration and sustainable forest management.

It follows from the arbitral tribunal’s decision that Ukraine’s export ban “does not serve any of these legitimate objectives”.

We will recall, in 2016, that the European Commissioner for Enlargement and Neighborhood Policy, Johannes Hahn, said that one of the main conditions for the resumption of cooperation between Ukraine and the IMF is the lifting of the ban on exporting Ukrainian timber abroad.

As RBC-Ukraine wrote, the EU Delegation in Ukraine also stressed that the policy of the European Union and European integration does not lead to deforestation, on the contrary, they help to resist it.
