The main Russia’s goal is not only the destruction of Ukraine as an independent state, but also creation of a certain analogue of the Soviet “empire” to control neighboring countries.
This opinion was expressed in an interview with TSN by the Deputy Prime Minister, Minister for the Reintegration of Temporarily Occupied Territories, Alexei Reznikov. He believes that this is necessary for the leadership of the aggressor country in order not to lose the absolute power and integrity of the Russian Federation.
“It seems to me that Russia’s geopolitical goal is to restore its influence. That is, this is the kind of pan-imperial politics that has always been in imperial Russia, then in the USSR and in the Russian Federation as a successor.” She wants to leave influence it is of your interest to stay within its limits. Therefore, it is necessary to have influence in Ukraine, Belarus, Moldova, the Caucasus countries, the Baltic countries. This is a belt for your safety ”, explained the minister.
Reznikov added that the Kremlin’s calculation is simple: if it loses influence in the listed states, it will lose to the West. Further, a successful experience of democratic changes at some later point may result in the overthrow of power in Russia itself.
“And this certainly does not suit the Russian ruling elite. Even the Belarusian case is very difficult for them today. Perhaps re-election in Belarus would be interesting, but it would mean that re-election is a consequence of the street protests of people who are in favor of democracy and free elections “. And the demonstration of this on the territory of the Russian Federation should definitely not be allowed, “the official stressed.
Summing up, he added that they also strive to mold a negative image of Ukraine to Russia, trying to convince the population that any Maidans always leads to collapse and division.

Reznikov also said that Russia has chosen a strategy of waiting in the situation with the war in Donbass. The invaders expect a change of attitude towards them from the West and the destabilization of Ukraine.

He also admitted that the government does not have a clear “plan B” to solve the problem of the military conflict in eastern Ukraine, but is always ready to look for it.
