Rada has toughened the punishment for car theft / GORDON

At the meeting on September 3 The Verkhovna Rada supported bill # 3301 at the second reading on the strengthening of criminal responsibility for theft of a car, reports the correspondent of the publication “GORDON”.

Voted in favor of the bill amending the criminal and criminal procedure codes of Ukraine 309 popular deputies with the required minimum of 226 votes.

According to the changes adopted, now for illegal possession of a vehicle will be penalized restriction of liberty for a period of three to five years or imprisonment for the same period. The rule on the fine for such a crime of art. 289 of the Penal Code were withdrawn.

Theft of a car with the help of “electronic devices to interfere with the work of technical means of protection” faces a prison sentence of five to eight years with or without confiscation of property. The same punishment is established for car theft, the cost of which ranges from 100 to 250 minimum non-taxable income of citizens. (the amount of damage is calculated from the amount of the fiscal social benefit; in 2020 it is 1051 UAH; that is, the minimum damage is 105.1 thousand UAH, the maximum – 262.7 thousand UAH).

The bill was adopted in first reading on July 14. Its co-author, Servant of the People’s MP Vyacheslav Medyanik, noted that the bill would allow all members of criminal groups who are involved in car theft to be brought to justice, and not just the direct perpetrators. .

In the explanatory note, the authors of the bill indicated (.docx) that, in their opinion, its approval will provide law enforcement agencies with a more effective legal mechanism to counter the illegal seizure of vehicles and will contribute to the effective protection of vehicles. rights of car owners.

In 2019, according to the Interior Ministry, Ukraine registered 5,374 cases of vehicle theft, of which 2250 open. Five years ago there were twice as many crimes of this type – 11 943 (discovered 3771).
