Rada approved the extension of the ban on social networks of the Russian Federation

248 people’s deputies voted in favor of the resolution

Parliament proposed that the National Security and Defense Council extend the sanctions to Mail.ru services and VKontakte and Odnoklassniki social networks.

The Verkhovna Rada voted to extend the sanctions against Russian social networks. This was learned during an extraordinary parliamentary meeting on Wednesday, May 13.

Then, for draft resolution No. 3319 “On the approval of proposals to extend the application of special economic measures and other restrictive measures (sanctions)” 248 deputies voted with the minimum required 226 votes.

The explanatory note states that the armed aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine continues.

“Accordingly, there remain legal foundations provided for in article 3 of the Law of Ukraine” on sanctions “to continue the application of sanctions until the end of the armed aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine,” the note says.

This decision proposes to approve and present to the Ukrainian National Security and Defense Council proposals to extend the sanctions period, in accordance with the decision of the National Security and Defense Council of April 28, 2017 “On the application of special special economic measures and other restrictive measures (sanctions) “, which was put into effect by presidential decree of May 15, 2017 (No. 133/2017).

Through this decision, in particular, Internet providers were prohibited from providing access services to Internet users in Ukraine by the resources of the Mail.ru services (www.mail.ru) and the VKontakte social networks (www.vk .com) and Odnoklassniki (www.ok .ru).

Following this vote, Parliament Speaker Dmitry Razumkov closed an extraordinary plenary session.

Recall that in May 2017, President Poroshenko’s decree on the blocking of Russian social networks and some media for three years came into force.

It was also reported that the SBU offers to extend sanctions against Russian social media Odnoklassniki and VKontakte for another three years. According to intelligence agencies, around 70% of destructive materials about Ukraine are promoted from the information space of the Russian Federation, including from these social networks.
