Russian President Vladimir Putin proposes allowing former presidents of the Russian Federation, who left this post prematurely or due to the expiration of their term, to retain the post of senator for life. He submitted to the State Duma a draft law on the procedure for the formation of the Council of the Russian Federation.

Reports from the website of the State Duma of the Russian Federation.

The former Russian president, whose term expired before the approval of this law, can request it within three months from the date of entry into force of the law. You also have the right to renounce the powers of a senator.

In addition, according to the proposed changes, in addition to the representatives of the legislative and executive authorities of the Russian subject and the former presidents, the Federation Council may include “no more than 30 representatives of the Russian Federation, appointed by the president , of which no more than seven can be appointed for life “.

The bill establishes that senators are appointed by presidential decree for six years or for life. Citizens who render outstanding services to the country in the field of public affairs can obtain senatorial status for life.

We recall, the State Duma on March 10 supported the amendment to remove the limitation on the number of presidential terms in the Russian Federation.

The vote on the amendments to the Constitution of the Russian Federation lasted from June 25 until the night of July 1. Putin’s zeroing of terms was supported by nearly 78% of Russians. This will allow him to stand in the elections of 2024 and 2036.

Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree on the publication of the country’s constitution as amended. The new version of the constitution came into effect on July 4, 2020.
