“We discuss Ukraine without Ukraine” – it was this message that became the key topic for discussion in our country after Vladimir Putin’s telephone conversation with Angela Merkel and Emanuel Macron.
And here, sadly, we fell in love with the Kremlin trick. After all, the main topic of the negotiations was not Donbass at all, but the Russian vaccine Sputnik V.
Dispute of the above number among the advanced states of the world: the United States and China lead Russia into isolation
Russia’s position
Ukraine paid special attention to the negotiations in the Putin Merkel Macron format. And this is logical, because during these negotiations, among other things, the war in the Donbass was discussed. The only question is: did we get the message correctly?
The first news about the “Ukraine without Ukraine discussion” spread thanks to the Russian media and the website of the Russian president in particular.
After all, it was the Kremlin that circulated the agenda on how the brave Putin convinced Merkel and Macron that it was Ukraine to blame for the escalation of the conflict in Donbass and that it was Kiev that refused to comply with the Minsk accords.

Location of the Elysee Palace
If we look at the Elysee Palace site, we will see only a third short paragraph of the document, which reads as follows:
“The need for Russia to make a firm commitment to stabilize the ceasefire in Ukraine and find a way out of the crisis in compliance with the Minsk agreements was emphasized.”
That is, during the negotiations, not a single decision on Ukraine was made. But still, why was Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky not invited to these negotiations? After all, it would make sense in the end.
What the West says
To find the answer to this question, I propose to look at what they wrote about these negotiations. western media, e.g:
- The Guardian;
- Sun;
- Politician.
All his titles were something like this: “Merkel, Macron and Putin are in talks to use Sputnik V in Europe.”
The main topic of the negotiations.
And now we look at the first paragraph of the Elysee Palace communiqué and we see the same thing: negotiations on probability. using “Sputnik V”.

Yes, unfortunately, Merkel and Macron decided to discuss the vaccine with Putin. It is true that it is not clear who was the first to raise this problem, but the Ukraine question was at the level of Navalny, Belarus, Syria, Libya and Iran.
The Kremlin is pushing the subvaccine
Now let’s find out: are Germany and France really ready to buy Sputnik V? In fact, the European Medicines Agency is monitoring this infravaccine and has repeatedly stated that its use should not be allowed.
Furthermore, the Kremlin’s obsessive desire to sell its subvaccine to Europe has raised suspicions among European leaders.
The president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, even demanded an explanation from the Kremlin: why is it offering Sputnik V to Europe, while in Russia itself the vaccination campaign is barely alive?

In addition, both Merkel and Macron clearly saw how the story ended with the purchase of the Russian drug by Slovakia.
Russia spins history
Russian propaganda is promoting the story of the supposed recognition of Sputnik V in Europe as much as it can. In particular, for this purpose they are used Screwed up social media accounts, corrupt media and European diplomats.
The strategy is simple: discredit the European vaccine and write a success story for the Russian one. For example, say that Hungary, Slovakia, Austria and even Italy are ready to start “Sputnik V” with their hands.
The truth about the real magnitude of the purchases and the crisis they create is modestly silent in the Kremlin.
The hotheads, fueled by the Kremlin, immediately began to shout that Germany and France were really willing to buy Sputnik V, as there were problems with AstraZeneca.
And Angela Merkel herself fueled such discussions, who on the eve announced the suspension of the use of the British vaccine for people under 60 years of age. And it doesn’t matter that WHO scientists have already shown that there is no connection between thrombosis and the AstraZeneca vaccine.
Harsh reaction from France
By the way, France, unlike Germany, was much more categorical on this issue. French Foreign Minister Le Drian last week accused Russia of using the vaccine to increase political influence.

He called for the Kremlin vaccination campaign “More a means of propaganda and aggressive diplomacy than a means of solidarity and medical assistance.”
Furthermore, the French EU commissioner, Thierry Breton, said that the European bloc does not need any “Sputnik V” at all. Because the EU can afford to deliver between 300 million and 350 million doses by the summer, which will allow half of the EU population to be vaccinated.
Why Merkel and Macron discussed the Russian vaccine
So why did Merkel and Macron suddenly decide to discuss with Putin the issue of delivering Russian Sputnik V to their countries, even though the Medicines Agency has not yet approved the medicine? There are only 2 reasons.
The first reason
The AstraZeneca vaccine is clearly not sufficient for the entire European Union today. Therefore, Europe pinned its hopes on supplying the American vaccines Pfizer, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson. Their mass parties were supposed to start arriving in April.
But in light of the fact that US President Joe Biden announced ambitious plans to vaccinate all Americans by the end of the summer, these deliveries may be postponed until later.
And they were expected until July, neither more nor less, 300 million doses, which would cover the second part of Europeans who would not receive AstraZeneca.
AstraZeneca has changed the name of its coronavirus vaccine
Therefore, the emergence of negotiations with Putin and statements about the alleged willingness to buy Sputnik V, perhaps banal blackmail from the United States. For example, if you do not provide us with the vaccine, we will buy it from our common enemy.
The second reason
Both Merkel and Macron have elections ahead of them, which they could lose miserably. In Merkel’s case, we are talking about her successor to the post of Chancellor of Germany and her party’s move to the Bundestag. Both the first and the second have problems.
After all, a favorite Merkel, and also Putin – Armin Laschet today cannot boast of high ratings. But in the Bundestag elections, the Green Party bypasses Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union. And therefore Merkel and her team urgently need some kind of victory.

In case of Macron – You will soon face the presidential elections in France. Recently, his team has created the image of Macron as a superhero who bravely resists all challenges, including COVID-19.
France was one of the last countries to tighten the quarantine last year. And this gave its results for Macron’s qualification. But only before the first outbreaks of disease.
Today it turned out that the French “did not appreciate” the “bold decisions” of Emanuel Macron. According to sociological surveys in February, more than 60% of the French said that Do not trust the executive in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic.
because and Macron needs at least some kind of victory in the fight with coronavirus, so as not to finally lose support for future elections.

Whether France and Germany are prepared to get seriously hooked on the Russian needle is an open question, but at the same time dubious. Quite It seems like a political flirtation with the United States and its own electorate. And yes, I hope it is now clear why Zelensky was not invited to the talks.
