Global manufacturers have promised to deliver flu vaccines to Ukraine in October-November, Health Minister Maxim Stepanov said. He said deliveries have already started.
Commercial structures are responsible for the availability of flu vaccines in Ukrainian pharmacies. This was announced in a briefing on October 28 by the Minister of Health of Ukraine, Maxim Stepanov, a correspondent for the “GORDON” publication reports.
The head of the Ministry of Health was asked why in the Zhytomyr, Kiev and Chernihiv regions in pharmacies it is not possible to find a vaccine against influenza.
“The delivery of these vaccines to Ukraine is a purely commercial market, and the main thing that the Ministry of Health does is that we communicate with world manufacturers. (…) This year, the total number of vaccines that world manufacturers go to bring to our market is more than 650 thousand doses, “said Stepanov.
According to him, the French company Sanofi (Vaxigrip tetravaccine) intends to supply most of the doses (about 500 thousand), the rest – by Green Cross Corporation from South Korea and Abbott Biologicals from the Netherlands.
“The vaccines will be delivered during October-November. In any case, this is what these global manufacturers have promised us. Deliveries to the Ukrainian market have already begun,” explained the head of the Ministry of Health.
Stepanov said that in 2019, 238 thousand citizens of Ukraine were vaccinated against influenza.
On August 27, Ukraine’s chief sanitary physician, Viktor Lyashko, said that 655,000 doses of influenza vaccines had already been delivered in Ukraine.
In August, the Ministry of Health asked Ukrainian citizens to get vaccinated against influenza, as vaccines are the most effective means of preventing influenza and its complications. Flu vaccination will prevent simultaneous infection with the flu virus and coronavirus, the department noted.
The Center for Public Health noted that the World Health Organization annually updates its recommendations on the composition of the vaccine. This year, the vaccines were developed taking into account the WHO forecast for the circulation of the following influenza strains:
- viruses such as A / Guangdong-Maonan / SWL1536 / 2019 (H1N1) pdm09;
- A / Hong Kong / 2671/2019-like virus (H3N2);
- B / Washington / 02/2019-like virus (Victoria B lineage);
- B / Phuket / 3073/2013-like virus (B / Yamagata lineage).
