What’s Happening in Belarus: Chronicle of Protests

  • Presidential elections were held in Belarus on August 9.
  • According to official data from the CEC, Lukashenko won 80.1% of the vote, his main opponent Tikhanovskaya – 10.1%, the other three candidates were supported by less than 2%.
  • Thousands of Belarusian residents, in disagreement with the election results, went to protest demonstrations, clashes with security agents. On August 11, a national strike was announced in the country.
  • In the early days of the protesters, the special police forces were brutally dispersed, thousands of people were arrested, many of them brutally beaten during arrest and in the remand center.

  • The largest Freedom March in the history of Belarus took place on August 16 in Minsk. Hundreds of thousands of people took to the streets.
