The European Union intends to tighten sanctions against Belarus if President Alexander Lukashenko does not respond to the EU’s demands. At the same time, the European Union still does not recognize the results of the elections in Belarus.
This was stated by the German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas, reports Bild.
“As the EU, we do not recognize the elections (of the president of Belarus – ed.) And we have decided on sanctions, which we will now implement. If Lukashenka does not react, new sanctions will be introduced,” Maas said.
The minister stressed that Lukashenka must be “finally ready for dialogue” and present a list of requirements.
“I ask Lukashenka to hold talks with the opposition, re-hold the elections and stop the violence against protesters. Lukashenka must show that he respects human rights and freedom of the press,” Maas added.
Let us remind you that Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia have imposed sanctions against the current President of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, and 29 other officials.
Later, Belarus passed asymmetric sanctions against the Baltic states.
In addition, the EU did not recognize the results of the elections in Belarus, and also began to work on sanctions against those responsible for counterfeiting and the violent dispersal of protesters.
