Ukraine’s first racket Elina Svitolina (No. 5 WTA) ended her fight at the French Open in tennis.

In the quarterfinal match, the Ukrainian lost to Nadya Podoroska of Argentina (No. 131 WTA, Q).

Roland Garros. 1/4 final
Elina Svitolina (Ukraine) – Nadia Podoroska (Argentina) – 2: 6, 4: 6

It’s hard to say how much the crown Svitolina entered this match weighed, but it did. Furthermore, from the very first play, it was clear that the opponent was not entirely simple, but Argentina’s line of errors in the first game apparently further strengthened the Ukrainian’s confidence that victory would be easy. Although after the break, Elina could not defend her first serve, and in the second catch she could not specify three break points. This instilled incredible confidence in Podoroska, she began to literally fly around the court and showed a very high level of classic clay tennis.

Svitolina, in turn, was not fully prepared for this. For a long time, she hardly interrupted the balls in the midfield, so of course she immediately received surprises. There is no chance to beat even the most advanced primer in this style. The depth of Svitolina’s blows was very shallow, the serve did not give easy points at all, and even with the movement there were obvious problems. It has been a long time since there were so many failures during the strikes in the worst traditions of Dayana. The result was a beating in the first set with no apparent chance. Podoska actively won 17 goals, which would have been impossible to believe before the start of the match.

In the second set, the best Ukrainian tennis player had to show if she really is a top and if she can make the most of such a difficult situation. Changes were made: the Ukrainian played deeper, so the opponent stopped finishing every second or third rally with her winners, and began to play with greater precision. This was enough to fight on an equal footing, but Elina couldn’t add a bit of enthusiasm to help her look better.

We talk a lot about serving. Today, a strong and focused serve could easily improve this match, but it did not. Because of this, Svitolina was literally beaten in her games, a potential advantage turned into a disadvantage. And Podoroska? She played as Elina allowed, due to the strong wind, she also found it difficult to cope with her games, but still managed to realize jumping in the ninth game. It was a watershed moment after which it became clear that it was time for Svitolina to pack her bags.

After such a defeat, it is customary to scold athletes, but this makes little sense. Elina lost this match herself and now she has to live with him, and not with us. It’s still hard to say how such a loss can help Svitolina’s career, but aside from hopes for a bright future, nothing remains.

In the semi-finals, Podoroska will face Igi Sviontek from Poland (No. 53 WTA) or Martina Trevisan from Italy (No. 159 WTA, Q).

As a reminder, it was the Ukrainian’s third quarter-final at Roland Garros. Previously, they lost both matches in this round (to Ana Ivanovic in 2015 and Simone Halep in 2017).
