The situation in the Syunik region has worsened after the signing of a trilateral peace agreement between Armenia, Russia and Azerbaijan.

In the event of an attack on the territory of Armenia, Russia will intervene in the situation. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said this. This was announced on Sunday, December 27, by the Public Television of the Republic.

“In case of an invasion of Syunik (the southern region of Armenia bordering Azerbaijan – ed.), Not only will the Armenian armed forces intervene. Russia will intervene,” promised the head of government.

According to Pashinyan, the inhabitants of the region fear that the deployment of new combat posts in Azerbaijan following the transfer of part of the Nagorno-Karabakh lands to the control of Baku threatens their security.

“The most important issue is security. As a result of the actions on the border, the war in Syunik was suppressed. Not only today, but in general, since we are now positioned so that in the event of an invasion against Syunik, not only the armed forces of Armenia but also Russia intervene. This was done just for this, “said Pashinyan.

In addition, the prime minister pointed out that the ongoing processes do not exclude discussions on border issues.

“For example, right now, issues related to about 20 parcels of land are being discussed,” said Pashinyan.

After the signing of a trilateral peace agreement between Armenia, Russia and Azerbaijan, Baku passed part of the territories that were under the control of Yerevan, including the Zangelan region, which borders the Syunik region. This brought the Armenian-Azerbaijani border much closer to the Armenian settlements and caused discontent among local residents. The heads of the communities of the Syunik region announced a threat to the security of the region and demanded the resignation of Pashinyan and the government.

Earlier, six Armenian soldiers were found in Nagorno-Karabakh, who were considered missing for 70 days. They were found in the territories that came under the control of Azerbaijan.
