What you need to know about the 2022 World Cup European qualification draw

When and where will the draw take place?


The ceremony will take place at the FIFA headquarters in Zurich on Monday, December 7. The start is at 7:00 p.m. The event will be held online for the first time in a long time without inviting guests. The only exceptions are former Italian stars Daniele de Rossi and the Netherlands, Rafael van der Wart, who will participate in the draw.

What is the classification and draw format?

13 teams from Europe will participate in the next World Cup, to be held in 2022 in Qatar. A qualifying tournament will be held to determine the teams.

There will be a group stage in the first qualifying round. 55 European teams will be divided into 10 groups: five groups of 5 teams each, another five – 6. The draw will be seeded. The highest ranked teams are in Pot 1, the lowest in Pot 6, and the winners of each of the ten qualifying groups advance directly to the World Cup. Teams that finish second are in the playoffs.

The playoffs will feature the 10 second-place teams in the groups, as well as the top two UEFA Nations League group winners that did not qualify for the World Cup and did not qualify for the playoffs. These 12 teams will be divided into three routes, each of which will host semi-finals and finals. All stages will consist of one match. The winner of each path goes to the World Cup.

Are there any draw restrictions?

Yes.

The four members of the Nations League Final Four (Belgium, Spain, Italy and France) will definitely fall into groups with five national teams.

The UEFA Executive Committee has imposed restrictions on matches between certain teams. For example, Ukrainian team He will definitely not play in the same group with Russia. Also, Azerbaijan and Armenia, Gibraltar and Spain, Kosovo and Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo and Russia, Kosovo and Serbia will not meet in qualifying.
