From time to time, clashes break out between protesters in support of convicted activist Sergei Sternenko and the police; citizens tried to break through the shield of the security forces and reach the Office of the President.

Protesters threw snowballs and firecrackers at police, law enforcement officers used tear gas. According to TSN, at least 10 detained citizens are known. In turn, Kiev writes today about the victims of the protesters.

Sternenko’s verdict
Today, February 23, the Odessa Primorsky District Court sentenced Sternenko to 7 years and 3 months in prison with the confiscation of half of his property.
He and another defendant in the Ruslan Dymchuk case were detained in the courtroom and taken to a remand center.
Sternenko was found guilty of committing crimes under Part 2 of art. 146 (Illegal imprisonment or kidnapping), part 2 of art. 187 (Theft) and Part 1 of art. 263 (Illegal handling of weapons, ammunition or explosives) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, and the punishment was imposed under articles 187 and 263, since under art. 146 the term for criminal prosecution has already expired. Dymchuk was found guilty under articles 146 and 187 and sentenced to a similar period.
The Sternenko case: what is known
- In 2015, in Odessa, Sternenko’s home was searched, during which the activist voluntarily handed over to law enforcement officers a compressed air pistol, a collection knife and a starter pistol (noise).
- Investigative actions were carried out on the basis of a statement by citizen Sergei Shcherbich about the kidnapping with the aim of taking possession of his funds in the amount of 300 UAH.
- Upon search, Sternenko was informed of a suspected kidnapping to seize the funds and was sent to a remand center, from which he was subsequently released on bail.
- Later, the activist was also charged with illegal possession of weapons.
