On Tuesday, December 1, the huge Arecibo radio telescope, which has played a key role in astronomical discoveries for more than half a century, fell completely in Puerto Rico.
This is reported by AP News.
The observatory collapsed after an antenna fell on it. The telescope’s 900-ton receiver platform fell onto the reflector plate.
The US National Science Foundation previously announced the closure of the Arecibo observatory: One of the additional cables broke in August, leaving a 305-meter-wide crack in the antenna. Then, in early November, the main cable was cut.
Let us remember that in 2017, Hurricane María partially destroyed the Arecibo radio telescope.
We also wrote that China will launch a panoramic telescope into space in December.
