The Investigation Committee announced on Saturday the verification of information on the mass death of marine animals on several beaches in the Kamchatka Territory.

According to preliminary data from the investigation, the death of marine life occurred due to the high concentration of petroleum hydrocarbons and phenols from an unidentified source in the coastal waters of the Pacific Ocean in the area of ​​the bays of Malaya, Srednaya and Bolshaya. Lagernaya. In addition, the sea water changed color, ”the Investigation Committee said in a statement.

The first reports of water contamination in the Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky area and a large number of dead animals began to arrive at the beginning of the week. Local residents and tourists wrote about blurred vision, sore throat, nausea, and other symptoms that occurred after bathing and did not go away for several weeks.

Petroleum products and phenol were found in the coastal waters near Khalaktyrsky Beach on the Kamchatka Territory, signs of contamination were also detected in three more areas of Avachinsky Bay, the Ministry of Natural Resources of the territory of Kamchatka.

“According to the updated data received, the increases were confirmed at approximately 2.5 times for phenols and 3.6 times for petroleum products,” said Aleksey Kumarkov, acting head of the Kamchatka Ministry of Natural Resources.

The reason for the contamination is not yet clear. Kumarkov said on Friday that the reason could be the discharge of bilge water or petroleum products from passing ships.

Publication source Meduza, who is close to the Kamchatka Territory government, said the contamination could be due to the military dumping waste into the river. The Defense Ministry denies any involvement in the incident.

The press service of the Pacific Fleet noted that the information that the fleet is associated with contamination of the ocean water in the beach area is not true. The department stressed that this information is being disseminated by foreign organizations.

Greenpeace called the incident an ecological disaster and announced that it would send an expedition to the site to investigate.

Local residents, as well as famous personalities, immediately began posting posts on the Internet confirming the large-scale contamination.

At the same time, the Kamchatka Territory Ministry of Natural Resources released pictures on Saturday showing a clean beach and the sea water is of normal color.
