The installation of a Christmas star on top of the main tree in Ukraine is a tradition that symbolizes the Star of Bethlehem.
Thus, for Radio Svoboda, the Primate of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, Metropolitan Epifanio, explained the scandal with the fabulous hat that had previously decorated the Christmas tree in Kiev.
“In general, we already have a certain tradition, every year on December 19, in Nicolás, the opening of the central Christmas tree, the main one in the country … And traditionally, every year a star was placed on top, which symbolizes the Star of Bethlehem. The light of the world that reaches the world ”, – he said.
The Metropolitan pointed out that when a hat is installed instead of the traditional star, disputes mature in society.
“We were forced to express our clear position that it is necessary to follow the traditions, and if someone wants to change these traditions, please, the day before it was necessary to organize some kind of national discussion, or at least at the level of the city of Kiev. . This was not so. only that they already saw de facto in the square that they were wearing this hat on the Christmas tree, “said Epifanio.
The head of the OCU added that after the call of the representatives of the churches, the organizers realized their mistake and took off their hats.
“And today we will see that the tree is lit, and at the top there will still be a traditional star that symbolizes the light of Bethlehem,” he said.
At the same time, Epiphanius explained that there is no single canon for the image of the star, rather an octagonal star from the Old Testament was installed in Kiev.
“There are no defined canons. The star is represented in different ways. We live in a certain period of time when the star had five points, it was a symbol of Soviet impious power. It is represented as octagonal, and more faces, angles or rays . Of course, the star of the Old Testament is an octagonal star. But there are no definite canons regarding the image of the corresponding number of these rays “, the metropolitan summarized.
As OBOZREVATEL reported, the installation of the country’s main Christmas tree was accompanied by a scandal. Instead of a Christmas star, a fairy hat was installed on top. Later, representatives of Protestant churches in Ukraine appealed to Kiev Mayor Vitaly Klitschko with a lawsuit to replace the hat on the country’s main Christmas tree with a traditional Christmas star.
And only on December 17 in the capital, an eight-pointed star was installed on the main Christmas tree, instead of a fabulous hat.
